2014 marked 90 years serving Mason County
Shelton Kiwanis celebrated its 90th anniversary with a luncheon on Friday, May 23 (See photos: Right). The club also hosted an Open House on Thursday, May 22 at the Shelton Civic Center. The Center, formerly the site of the Lincoln Gymnasium, is where the club carried out its first civic project: roofing the Lincoln Gymnasium in 1924. From now until May 22, the Mason County Historical Museum is hosting a commemorative display, honoring the club and its 90 years of service.
The Kiwanis Club of Shelton has been serving the Mason County community since 1924. In that year, Shelton’s “Knife and Fork” businessmen’s club joined Kiwanis who – founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan – already had a strong focus on business networking and service. Today, the mission of Kiwanis International is to “change the world, one child and one community at a time”. For 90 years, Shelton Kiwanis has supported a variety of youth and community programs – everything from swimming and water safety lessons for young children to hosting a County-wide track meet. Currently the club: sponsors Scouts, the SHS Key Club, and Missoula Children’s Theater; organizes academic and behavioral recognition programs in local schools; provides thousands of dollars annually for student scholarships; participates in Adopt A Highway and Relay For Life; partners with the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce on beautification efforts; and assists the Catalyst Park Food Bank & Community Garden, 40 et 8’s holiday food baskets, Sound Learning, South Sound Reading, and others. Shelton Kiwanis continues to be committed to improving the lives of the children, friends, and neighbors that call Mason County home. They are proud sponsors of the Elma, Belfair, Pioneer, Kristmas Town, Hood Canal, Mt. View and Seniors Kiwanis Clubs. Service is at the heart of every club and, internationally, Kiwanis members stage nearly 150,000 service projects, devote more than 6 million hours of service, and raise nearly US $100 million every year for communities, families and projects. |
