Food bank garden helps local kids, families
A beautiful, verdant garden now sits on the site of a former brush-covered city lot.
In collaboration with WSU Master Gardeners, 4-H, and the City of Shelton, Kiwanis was able to transform the space. The Catalyst Park Food Bank & Community Garden is home to 12,000 square feet of food bank garden and 24 raised community garden beds available to local families and individuals.
The garden is managed and worked by Master Gardener volunteers like Kiwanian Sybil Jones. The improvements made to the property—the addition of two sheds, a drip line irrigation system, fencing, a picnic/meeting area and children's garden—were completed by volunteers with funds raised in our community. Each year, our club helps to cover the operating costs of seeds, water, soil, mulches and tools.
In 2014, the food bank garden harvested and donated more than 3,800 pounds of fresh, nutritious vegetables to Saints Pantry Food Bank.
