Pancakes in the Park Sunset in 2024
A tradition for nearly 75 years, we regret to announce that our long-standing community event will no longer be taking place. This decision comes after careful consideration and deliberation. We understand the disappointment this news may bring, and we want to express our gratitude for the support and participation over the years. While it saddens us to announce the end of this beloved event, we are grateful for the memories and community spirit it has fostered. We remain committed to our community and look forward to continuing our service projects and programs supporting Shelton & Mason County.
Pieces on Pancakes
- The first year pancakes, waffles, a selection of ham and/or bacon and eggs any way you wanted them were offered. They had so much trouble with power and keeping up the menu was quickly streamlined.
- Our novel pancake machine was built in 1955 by volunteer labor with material donated by ITT Rayonier Laboratory.
- Until the 1990s, the club used the metal flatware and cooked eggs in large aluminum pans which all had to be washed by hand. You can imagine the size of the dishwashing crew!
- Breakfast fixings were prepared at one of the local grade schools for more than 30 years. The school principal and Kiwanians would cook ham, make coffee, the drive it to the park.
- Event advertising gimmicks of the past were priceless. Kiwanians stopped a working train on Railroad Avenue to serve pancakes (stopping traffic in the process), used cement trucks to "hold the batter", and even tossed paper plates with event details from an airplane!
